Buying checklist

Check provider compatibility

Especially for cable internet, not every modem is accepted on every provider network.

Know whether you need a modem, router or both

Fibre homes may use an ONT plus a router, while cable homes may use a gateway or separate devices.

Match the hardware to your speed tier

Do not buy an older device that will bottleneck the internet plan you are paying for.

Think about coverage

A larger home may need better placement or mesh coverage rather than just a faster plan.

Look at support and warranty

Returns, firmware updates and hardware reliability can matter as much as the specs.

Consider Ethernet ports and features

Bridge mode, Wi-Fi standard and wired ports can be important for serious users.
